This Foldable Phone Survived a 6-Foot Drop — The Other? Total Wipeout

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Folding

Foldable smartphones are the future—if they can survive everyday use. In a recent durability showdown, tech experts at Android Authority put the top contenders—Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Google Pixel Fold—through a brutal series of real-world durability tests including drop simulations, hinge stress tests, water submersion, and dust exposure.

The results were eye-opening: one model aced the durability challenge, while the other showed serious structural flaws under pressure.

The Test Setup

Both devices were subjected to:

  • Drop tests from 3, 5, and 6 feet
  • 500 hinge folds with debris simulation
  • 1-minute water dunk at 1-meter depth
  • Dust chamber exposure for 15 minutes

The Galaxy Z Fold5 showed only minor hinge wear after the debris test and survived every drop with just surface scratches. The Pixel Fold, however, cracked on the 5-foot drop, and its hinge became stiff after dust exposure.

Build Quality Breakdown

Why the difference? Samsung uses a redesigned “Flex Hinge” with fewer mechanical parts and a reinforced Armor Aluminum frame. Google’s hinge, though robust, showed more vulnerability to foreign particles.

According to teardown experts at iFixit, the Galaxy Z Fold5’s internal waterproofing and better screen bezel cushioning may give it a slight edge in real-world resilience.

What It Means for Buyers

If you’re considering a foldable phone for daily use, the Z Fold5 appears more rugged out of the box. Still, both devices are expensive and require care—especially in environments with dust, sand, or moisture.

Investing in a case, screen protector, and water-resistant pouch is still strongly recommended.

Conclusion

Foldables are finally closing the gap between form and function. But as this test reveals, durability still varies widely by model. If you’re clumsy or active outdoors, the Galaxy Z Fold5 might just be the foldable phone that’s built to last.
