NASA and IBM Unveil “Surya,” an AI That Predicts Solar Storms Two Hours Ahead

Imagine a weather forecast for space, complete with alerts for solar storms that could jam satellites or mess up our power grid. That’s what NASA built with IBM—they launched Surya today, an open-source AI that processes nine years of Solar Dynamics Observatory data to forecast solar flares two hours ahead, and it’s about 16 % more accurate than existing methods. What Makes Surya Different

Surya was trained on nearly a decade of solar observation data. It picks up early signs of solar eruptions with much better timing than the old models. Meaning when the Sun gets stormy, we’ve got a better shot at protecting our satellites, GPS systems, air travel and power networks here on Earth.

Why This Matters to You

We all depend on digital systems—streaming, online banking, that GPS route that saves your commute. If a solar storm hits unexpectedly, those systems could go dark. Surya helps buy time to prep. I find it really cool that we’re applying AI to defend our modern lifestyle from cosmic weather.
